Brown Sugar Frosting Recipe

Rich, Creamy, and Caramel-Like Frosting for Cakes & Cupcakes

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark, depending on preference)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (or whole milk)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 to 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted

Instructions

Step 1: Melt the Butter & Brown Sugar

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Add brown sugar and stir constantly until fully dissolved and smooth.
  3. Let the mixture simmer for 2 minutes, stirring frequently.

Step 2: Add Cream & Cool the Mixture

  1. Pour in heavy cream (or milk) while stirring continuously.
  2. Let cook for another minute, then remove from heat.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature before proceeding.

Step 3: Beat in Vanilla & Salt

  1. Once cooled, transfer to a mixing bowl.
  2. Add vanilla extract and salt and beat for 1 minute until fluffy.

Step 4: Incorporate Powdered Sugar

  1. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating until smooth.
  2. Adjust consistency by adding more powdered sugar (thicker) or a splash of milk (thinner).
