  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 12 slices 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Pink and blue food coloring

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 tbsp heavy cream
  • Optional: food coloring to match the theme

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Batter:
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until combined.
  4. Add Color:
Divide the batter into two bowls. Add pink food coloring to one bowl and blue to the other, mixing until the colors are vibrant.
  5. Bake:
Pour the batter into greased cake pans, making sure to alternate layers if desired. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool:
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Frosting:
In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, then the heavy cream, mixing until smooth. Optional: add food coloring to match your theme.
  8. Layer and Decorate:
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a cake plate, spread a layer of blue or pink frosting in between, and add the second cake layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting. Decorate as desired!
