Ingredients
  

For the patties
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced fresh onion gives a sweet, savory base
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs use plain breadcrumbs for controlled seasoning
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp garlic powder fresh garlic adds extra flavor
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
For the gravy
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk for a lighter sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce extra for depth
For the topping
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. In a big bowl, mix the ground beef, finely diced onion, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce by hand until it holds together.
  3. Shape the mixture into thick patties, then sear each patty in a skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides.
Assembling and Baking
  1. Arrange the browned patties in the greased baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, cream (or milk), and the extra 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, then pour over the patties.
  3. Top each patty with shredded cheese.
  4. Bake for 35-45 minutes, until cooked through and gravy bubbles.
  5. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

Mix patties ahead and refrigerate for 20 minutes before cooking. For watery gravy, mix cornstarch with cold water and stir it into the sauce before baking further. Add a spoonful of Dijon mustard for extra flavor.
