Ingredients

For the Crumble Topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Gives structure to your crumble topping.
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark) Adds a rich sweetness; light for subtlety, dark for deep flavor.
  • 1 tsp baking powder Helps the crumble to rise and stay fluffy.
  • 1/2 tsp salt Balances the sweetness perfectly.
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon Brings that warm, comforting aroma.
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter, melted For a rich, buttery flavor without extra salt.
For the Apple Filling
  • 2 1/2 lb Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and chopped (about 6 to 7 cups) Their tartness creates a beautiful balance with the sugar.
  • 1/2 cup granulated or brown sugar Use granulated for a lighter touch or brown for richer sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice Brightens the flavor of the apples and prevents browning.
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch or all-purpose flour Helps thicken the apple filling so it’s not too runny.
  • 1/2 tsp salt Enhances the overall flavors.
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon For that extra cozy warmth.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the chopped Granny Smith apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch (or flour), and salt until coated evenly.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Drizzle in the melted butter and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Pour the apple mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  2. Bake for about 35-45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbling.
Serving
  1. Allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

To save time, prep the apples a day ahead. If apples are too juicy, add more cornstarch. For a twist, incorporate nuts or oats into the crumble.
