Preparation
- Preheat your oven to a cozy 375°F (190°C). The anticipation is half the fun!
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until they are soft and translucent.
- In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced potatoes, heavy cream, and the sautéed onion and garlic mixture. Season generously with salt and pepper.
Layering
- Layer half of the potato mixture into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle half of the cheese on top.
- Repeat with the remaining potato mixture, topping with the rest of the cheese.
Baking
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
Serving
- Garnish with fresh herbs if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
Use a mandoline slicer for evenly sliced potatoes. If potatoes aren’t tender enough, cover and return to the oven for a bit longer. For an extra kick, add cooked bacon bits or spinach.
