Ingredients

For the Hamburger Patties
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 clove garlic, minced Fresh garlic gives it that extra flavor boost.
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
For the Onion Gravy
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced onion Slice them thin so they melt into the gravy.
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Method

Preparation
  1. Mix the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, black pepper, 1 tsp salt, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Use your hands to fold gently until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 even patties and press a slight dimple in the center of each.
Cooking
  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil shimmers, place the patties in the pan and sear for 3–4 minutes per side.
  2. Remove the patties and set them aside.
  3. Add the thinly sliced onions to the skillet. Stir and let soften for 5–7 minutes until translucent, then continue cooking until golden.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking until smooth.
  5. Season the gravy with 1/2 tsp salt. Return the patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for 10 minutes.

Notes

For a richer gravy, add a splash of heavy cream or a teaspoon of Dijon.
