Preparation
- Season the meat by sprinkling salt and pepper over the ground beef or sausage-beef mix.
Cooking
- In a large skillet, brown the seasoned beef and chopped onion together until the beef is browned, draining excess grease.
- Stir in the tomato sauce and tomato paste, followed by the Italian seasoning, parsley, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar.
- Bring the mixture to a boil and add one cup of water, stirring to combine.
- Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- If desired, add fresh basil just before serving.
Notes
For quick prep, consider making a double batch and freeze half for later. If the sauce tastes too acidic, add a bit more sugar to balance it.
