Method
Preparation
- Cut the butter into 8 pieces and set it out at room temperature while you prepare the potatoes.
- Peel the potatoes if you prefer them smooth. Cut them into 1½ inch pieces and rinse under cold water.
Cooking
- Place the potatoes in a large pot, fill it with cool water, and add salt; it should taste like the sea.
- Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
- While potatoes are cooking, heat the milk in a small pot until warm but not boiling.
- After about 10 minutes, the potatoes should be fork-tender. Drain and let them sit for 2 minutes.
- Mash the potatoes until smooth and fluffy using a masher or ricer.
Combining
- Scatter the softened butter over the warm potatoes and stir until melted.
- Gradually pour in the warmed milk, mixing until combined. Add salt, pepper, and any optional ingredients.
Serving
- Serve warm, ideally straight from the bowl, surrounded by loved ones.
Notes
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat with a splash of milk to retain creaminess. Consider adding roasted garlic for an extra flavor boost.
