Ingredients

Potatoes
  • 3 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
Cream Mixture
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic = bigger flavor
  • 1 tsp salt Using unsalted butter helps control salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
Cheese Topping
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan
  • 3 tbsp butter, cut into small pats Dot the top with butter pieces
Garnish
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped For garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a large baking dish.
  2. Layer the thinly sliced potatoes in the dish, overlapping slightly.
Cooking
  1. Warm the cream and milk in a saucepan with the minced garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until just warm; do not boil.
  2. Pour the warm cream mixture evenly over the potatoes, pressing gently.
  3. Sprinkle the cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top.
  4. Dot the top with the butter pieces.
  5. Bake uncovered for about 50 minutes until bubbling and golden.
  6. Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.

Notes

Use a mandoline for even potato slices. If the top browns too fast, tent loosely with foil and continue baking. For a variation, stir in smoked paprika or layer thinly sliced onions.
