Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 10 cups Crusty bread, cubed Use day-old bread for better texture.
  • 1 cup Onions, chopped Use yellow or sweet onions.
  • 1 cup Celery, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Butter Use unsalted butter.
  • 2 cups Rich broth (chicken or vegetable) Low-sodium broth works well.
  • 1 tablespoon Salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper Adjust to taste.
Aromatic Herbs
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh sage, chopped Other herbs like thyme and rosemary can be mixed in.
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh thyme, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh rosemary, chopped
  • Optional Sausage, cooked Brown sweet Italian sausage for added flavor.
  • Optional Chopped nuts Walnuts or pecans for a nutty crunch.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cube the bread and let it sit on the counter to dry for a bit.
Cooking
  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and celery and cook until softened.
  2. In a big bowl, combine the cubed bread, sautéed onion and celery, and the herbs. Toss gently.
  3. Pour in enough broth to moisten the mixture, seasoning with salt and pepper, adjusting to taste.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the top is golden and slightly crisp.
Serving
  1. Serve warm and enjoy with family and friends.

Notes

Prepare the bread a day in advance for an optimal texture. This stuffing can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days, or frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven or skillet, adding a splash of broth if needed.
