Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 loaf loaf of French bread or Italian bread Crusty exterior, soft interior works best
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic = bigger flavor
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened Unsalted butter helps control salt
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes, diced Choose firm-ripe tomatoes for less watery topping
  • Fresh basil leaves, chopped Tear, don’t chop, for brighter aroma
  • Salt and pepper to taste Taste the tomatoes first
  • Olive oil (optional) A light drizzle brightens the finish

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice the loaf lengthwise to get two even halves.
  3. Mix the softened butter with the minced garlic in a small bowl until smooth and fragrant. Spread the garlic butter evenly over both cut sides.
Baking
  1. Place the bread butter-side up on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes until it's golden and crisp.
  2. Meanwhile, toss the diced tomatoes with the chopped basil, salt, and pepper in a bowl; taste and adjust.
  3. Remove the bread from the oven, spoon the tomato mixture over the warm halves, and drizzle with olive oil if desired.
Serving
  1. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

Time-saver: Mince garlic ahead and keep it in oil in the fridge for quick use. Common mistake + fix: Watery tomatoes make the bread soggy; drain seeds or pat diced tomatoes lightly on paper towel. Simple variation: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or swap basil for fresh oregano for a peppery twist.
